About Daniel James

Daniel James is an author of speculative fiction from Liverpool, England.

Growing up with a very active imagination and raised on superhero comics, horror movies, and books by authors such as Robert McCammon, Dan Simmons, Clive Barker, and F. Paul Wilson, Daniel was enamoured by adventurous tales of monsters and suspense.

However, he didn't start writing until his final year at university, when he was growing increasingly disinterested with his studies and writing his dissertation. And so, on the side, he began writing a fantasy novel and loved the creative experience.

His first horror novel managed to grab the attention of a New York literary agent, and while not picked up, his second novel, a Neo-noir crime story, was picked up, with the agent publishing it in-house. Emboldened to continue writing, Daniel wanted to revisit the first fantasy book he wrote at university, being unable to shake those more fantastical characters. The result was Hourglass, and with this book he was able to lay the groundwork for a series with an expansive scope, a universe full of all the weird, wild and genre-mashing ideas he had first attempted to write at university.
